Junk Scientists Try to Weaponize Hurricane Harvey. Again.

Man-made climate change is making hurricanes worse, says a study published by the American Geophysical Union, and enthusiastically endorsed by the Washington Post.

According to WaPo:

It is still a matter of debate whether climate change will increase the number of hurricanes, but it is more and more clear that human-caused heating of the planet will boost their severity.

This is absolute rubbish. “Junk scientists weaponising weather”, as the great Paul Homewood puts it. But perhaps we could have guessed this, given that the paper’s lead author is none other than Kevin “Travesty” Trenberth.

Trenberth, a moustacheoed alarmist and IPCC lead author who works at the Climate Analysis Section at the US National Center for Atmospheric Research, is powerfully invested in the great climate change scare story.

In 2009 he sent the infamous email – exposed during Climategate – lamenting the fact that global temperatures weren’t playing in accordance with the alarmists’ computer models:

The fact is that we can’t account for the lack of warming at the moment and it is a travesty that we can’t.

More disturbingly, in 2005 as an Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Lead Author, he misrepresented the views of one of his contributing expert authors, Chris Landsea, in order to ramp up the scare story. Landsea, a hurricane expert, had said that recent hurricane activity had not been made more severe by “global warming.” Trenberth, not a hurricane expert, overruled Landsea and held a press conference declaring the opposite. As a result Landsea resigned from the IPCC. (For more details, see my previous article here)

Imagine Trying to Escape a Hurricane in a Tesla…

Would you want to flee a hurricane in a gas-fuelled pick up? Or a battery-powered Tesla?

Last week, drivers of the latter got lucky when they were bailed out of disaster courtesy of Tesla’s canny marketing department. (h/t Eric Worrall at Watts Up With That?)

Tesla drivers who fled Hurricane Irma last weekend received an unexpected lesson in modern consumer economics along the way. As they sat on choked highways, some of the electric-car giant’s more keenly priced models suddenly gained an extra 30 or so miles in range thanks to a silent free upgrade.

The move, confirmed by Tesla, followed the request of one Florida driver for a limit on his car’s battery to be lifted. Tesla’s cheaper models, introduced last year, have the same 75KwH battery as its more costly cars, but software limits it to 80% of range. Owners can otherwise buy an upgrade for several thousands of dollars. And because Tesla’s software updates are online, the company can make the changes with the flick of a virtual switch.

But that’s easy enough to arrange when hardly anyone drives the things.

What happens in the near-future when, we’re told, everyone is going to be driving electric cars – whether they like it or not?

Well a German IT expert called Hadmut Danisch has been doing the math. And the result isn’t pretty.

Damp Squib Irma Spares Mar-a-Lago; Wreaks Havoc on Climate Chicken Littles

Irma is now officially the most disastrous hurricane in the history of the world…
…But only if you’re a radical Muslim or a climate alarmist or you work in the construction industry.

For the last week, all the usual suspects from green hedgefunder Tom “rhymes with liar” Steyer to anti-capitalist disaster harpie Naomi Klein – plus their de facto allies in Islamic State – have been wetting their knickers with excitement at the prospect of a biblical inundation to rival Noah’s flood.

Instead the worst possible thing happened.

Not only did Irma fail to destroy nearly as many Trump-voting Floridian homes and businesses as they had hoped; but it left the mother of all targets – Mar-a-Lago – without virtually a scratch.

#Irma at Landfall Comes 7th Behind 1935 Labor Day Storm

It will come as little consolation to the millions whose homes and businesses are currently being devastated by wind and flood but Irma is by no means the worst recorded storm to hit the U.S.

In recent years both Andrew (1992) and Katrina (2005) ranked higher; and the worst remains the 1935 Labor Day storm where wind speed on landfall was 160 kts – 45 kts faster than Irma.

The rankings were compiled by hurricane expert Philip Klotzbach of the Department of Atmospheric Science at Colorado State University. (h/t Watts Up With That?)

This hasn’t, of course, prevented the usual suspects from trying to make political mileage out of this natural weather event.

Islamic State and Hillary Supporters Beg Hurricane Irma – ‘Destroy Trump’s America!’

Islamic State supporters have united with their natural allies on the regressive left to celebrate the destructive power of Hurricane Irma on the Great Satan and its wicked, climate-denying president Donald Trump.

Here are some screenshots of ISIS-supporting sites, provided by jihadist monitor MEMRI.

Though Islamists and progressives differ as to the cause of hurricanes – one side ascribes them to Allah, the other to Donald Trump and man’s selfishness, greed and refusal to amend his carbon-guzzling lifestyle – they are both unanimous that the damage being done is good thing.

While the followers of ISIS want the whole of America destroyed, the followers of Hillary seek the more modest goal of seeing one of Trump’s homes reduced to rubble.

From Harvey to Irma, Climate Alarmists Feast Greedily on Hurricane Disaster

The vultures of climate alarmism are just loving this run of hurricane disasters.

Whatever the spin the goal is always the same: to exploit the personal tragedies of the disaster victims for political gain by dishonestly pretending that natural extreme weather events are somehow connected with “man-made climate change.”

Some are more blatant about it than others.

This scientist from German’s hard-left, climate-alarmism-promoting Potsdam Institute, for example, knows that there is no credible link between hurricane activity and climate change. So instead, plays the “climate change made it worse” game. Which, of course, is more than good enough for Bloomberg…

One Last Time – Hurricane Harvey Had Nothing Whatsoever to Do with ‘Climate Change’

Hurricane
AP/Charlie Riedel

All week some of the very worst people in climate activism have been trying to make political mileage out of Hurricane Harvey.

They range from the inevitable Naomi Klein

NOW IS EXACTLY the time to talk about climate change, and all the other systemic injustices — from racial profiling to economic austerity — that turn disasters like Harvey into human catastrophes.

…and the inevitable Michael “Hide the Decline” Mann

Climate change worsened the impact of Hurricane Harvey.

…to whichever disgruntled, anti-Trump, predictably left-wing NOAA employee runs the @altnoaa Twitter account:

What all these blowhard charlatans have in common is that they are all talking drivel. They are, as the EPA rightly says, attempting “to politicize an ongoing tragedy.”

As scientists – or, in Klein’s case, people with pretensions to having scientific evidence on their side – they really ought to know better than to pin man-made climate change on a natural meteorological event which has nothing whatsoever to do with man-made climate change.
